Bore and/or piston wear in the solenoid dampers can allow for variation or loss of the fluid flow pressure between the control solenoids and the related valves and clutches.
Correction:

Solenoid dampers are used in Toyota/Lexus UA80E/F & UB80E/F series transmissions to dampen or smooth out the signal fluid pressure applied from each control solenoid before the fluid flows to their respective valves and clutches.
